Technology Skills

Picture
Technology skills are a common barrier for many of  to land a job from what I have learned from both our members and the many other Job seekers that I come in contact with.
For some the technology gap to what employers need is wide, for many it is just a question of some additional training and maybe just one or two skills that are needed.

One of our earliest success stories when we only had one meeting location. She was a woman from River Edge Library NhN program, many years with her company who didn't use Microsoft word, as they used another software platform. A member suggested she take classes at the community college and she did. She had an interview after completing the classes and had to take a test and needed to know some functions on Word that she would not have if she didn't take that class. She passed the test and is a NhN success story.

We have moved to create a working community partnership with Microsoft Retail Stores where we either send groups of 15-20 members for free training, and we are recently working on a pilot program to have regular weekly meetings at select stores.to determine what adjustments needed to our standard library meeting format.

Microsoft Retail Stores are working with NhN in many areas to offer free software classes.
And we are in a pilot test to open up weekly meeting chapters in the meeting space of these stores.

Other Microsoft Store locations United States

With the holiday shopping season wrapped up, Microsoft this morning announced six locations in the U.S. where the company plans to open its first retail stores of 2013. It’s part of a broader effort by the company to increase its retail footprint as a marketing and distribution strategy, to have more direct interaction with consumers.

Here’s the list of the first six stores planned by the company in 2013.
  • The Shops at La Cantera, San Antonio, Texas
  • Dadeland Mall, Miami, Fla.
  • Beachwood Place, Beachwood, Ohio
  • Westfield San Francisco Centre, San Francisco
  • City Creek Center, Salt Lake City
  • St. Louis Galleria, St. Louis
Microsoft says it opened 51 stores in 2012, but those included specialty “popup” stores that were opened for the holidays with a limited selection of products. Those specialty stores will stay open into the new year, and in some cases Microsoft is turning them into permanent full-line retail locations. (The Miami, San Francisco, St. Louis and Salt Lake City stores above are examples.)

The six new permanent stores will bring the company to 37 full retail locations in the U.S. and Canada. (That number doesn’t include specialty stores). The company is also reported to be planning its first European stores in 2013.

Apple had 250 retail stores in the U.S. and 140 internationally as of September.
